On Thursday, August 8th, members of Unite Here local 23 in Dallas, along with partners from various allied unions and organizations, did a banner drop near the Dallas headquarters of American Airlines to send a message: PAY YOUR FAIR SHARE! Since July, SkyChefs airline catering workers have been demonstrating against the poverty wages and inaccessible healthcare benefits they’re offered on the job, with American Airlines being one of the most egregious offenders.
Over the last five years, American Airlines has earned nearly $15 billion in profit. Yet, the majority of the airline catering workers servicing this airline still earn less than $15 per hour with starting wages just over $9 per hour. Meanwhile, family health insurance premiums are over $500 per month for these employees, leaving many with an impossible choice between their health and their bills, having to work multiple jobs to make ends meet.
Starting in July, union members and their allies have been demonstrating in weekly pickets at DFW International Airport to raise awareness of their plight, and all of this has been leading up to a huge action at American Airlines headquarters on August 13. DSA North Texas and DSA members from around the state will be out in solidarity on that day, and if you’d like to sign up to join in as well, click here.
